Sunscreen: The Protection Your Skin Needs

Aside from eating superfoods like fruits and vegetables and drinking plenty of water, sunscreen is another healthy way to take care of your skin. This time of year, the sun is constantly out and its rays can cause serious damage. The ultraviolet rays of the sun actually break down the collagen and elastin in your skin causing it to look less soft and smooth. The sun can also cause effects of aging such as, wrinkles, skin spots, and possibly skin cancer. It is important to always apply sunscreen.

Tips for Applying Sunscreen:

• It is recommended by dermatologists to apply a good sunscreen with plenty of UVA and UVB protection- SPF 30 or higher, 20 minutes before stepping outdoors. Applying 20 minutes prior gives your skin time to absorb the protective ingredient.
• From cloudy days to beach days, it is important to apply a plentiful amount of sunscreen to your body. As you apply the sunscreen make sure to evenly coat it and avoid missing spots.
• Don’t forget the lips. - Many times when people apply sunscreen, they forget that their lips need love too. The lips are a common spot for skin cancer and should not be missed when applying the protectant. Using an SPF 30 lip balm, a specialized lip balm, or sunscreen provides the necessary protection.
• Always reapply. - A very common misconception that people have is that sunscreen only needs to be applied once for the whole day. It is important to reapply sunscreen every two hours and more often if you perspire heavy or go swimming
• Your eyes need protection from the sun too. Sunglasses are an inexpensive and stylish way to keep your eyes protected from the sun.

Sunscreen is an important factor in the health of your skin. Whether it’s a sizzling summer day or a breezy spring morning, sunscreen should always be applied. Finding body lotions, moisturizers, and chapsticks with a SPF 30 or higher can eliminate forgetful sunscreen application. Remember: you don’t have to lie on the beach to soak up the sun; protect your skin daily.
